Matar paneer is a popular North Indian dish that is made for main course lunch or dinner and goes well with Roti, parantha, naan or rice.
Ingredients of Matar Paneer Recipe
- 250gms paneer (cubed)
- 2 cups green peas (peeled)
- 3-4 Green chillies (slit a little)
- 2 tbsp edible oil
- 2 medium onions, chopped
- 4-5 garlic cloves
- 1 tsp ginger, chopped
- 2 medium tomatoes finely chopped
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 Bay leaf (tej patta)
- 1/2 tsp turmeric (haldi)
- 1 tbsp salt/ as per taste
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tbsp coriander leaves (for garnish), chopped
How to Make Matar Paneer
- heat oil in a wok and deep fry paneer cubes. Dont over fry them
- 1.Blend the onions, garlic and ginger to a paste.
- 2.Heat oil and add the cumin seeds and the bay leaves.
- 3.Add onion paste and saute till brown for aruond 4-5 minutes.
- 4.Add tomatoes, turmeric, salt, garam masala, red pepper and the coriander powder, and stir-fry till it starts leaving oil.
- 5.Add peas, paneer and the green chillies and saute over high heat till glossy.
- 6.Add two cups water, bring to a boil and simmer for 5-10 minutes.
- 7.Serve hot, garnished with the coriander leaves.
Recipe notes
- Use fresh paneer and dont deep fry for long as this may make it rubbery and chewy. Paneer used without frying also tastes equally great.
- Fresh peas does not take much time to get cooked but refrigerated peas(not the frozen ones) takes more time to cook.
- Peas can be steamed with 1 cup of water with some salt.
