Kanda Poha

Poha is a most famous Maharashtrian breakfast recipe made in different ways with flattened rice. The most common type of Poha that is commonly prepared in household and also as street food is Kanda poha/ Kande Pohe.

The word “Kanda” means Onion. Kanda poha made with flattened rice tempered with curry leaves, onions and spices.

This recipe of Kanda Poha is not only healthy for kids and adults but also very tasty and easy to make. Moreover Kanda Poha is one of the best solutions for anytime hunger. Let’s start off with the recipe of Kanda Poha.

Ingredients for Kanda Poha (Onion Poha)

  • 2 cups thick poha (flattened rice)
  • 1 large onion – finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 2-3 tablespoon Peanuts
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • Salt as required
  • 10 curry leaves
  • 1 green chilli finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons coriander leaves (cilantro leaves) finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice/ as required
  • Grated coconut (as required)

How to Make Kanda Poha / Onion Poha

  • Rinse the poha in water till they soften.
  • Now add salt and turmeric powder to the poha and gently mix.
  • Heat oil in a pan over low to medium flame.
  • Now Crackle the mustard seeds first.
  • Add peanuts and fry them.
  • Then add onions and saute them till they become translucent.
  • Add curry leaves and green chilies. Saute for half a minute.
  • Add the poha and stir.
  • Cover and steam the poha for 2-3 minutes on a low flame.
  • When cooking check after 1 or 1.5 minutes and give a stir again.
  • Switch off the flame and let the kanda poha remain covered for 1-2 minutes.
  • Remove the lid and sprinkle some lemon juice, coriander leaves and grated coconut on poha.
  • Mix well gently and serve kanda poha hot with tea/ coffee or juice.

Recipe Notes:

  • Rinse the poha in a strainer or colander under running water and don’t soak them in water. Rinsing the poha grains softens them easily.
  • After rinsing Poha well, press a grain and if it gets crushed/mashed easily then it is soft enough to be cooked. Otherwise, if it is dry and does not get mashed easily then sprinkle little water over it.
  • Add on to nutritional values by adding peas, carrot and potatoes especialyy for kids.
