Let’s have a look how to make Healthy, delicious Chana Poha.

Ingredients for Chana Poha

  • 2 cups thick poha (flattened rice)
  • 1/2 cup soaked and boiled Black Chickpea (Kala Chana)
  • 1 medium onion – finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • Salt as required
  • 10 curry leaves
  • 1 green chilli finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons coriander leaves (cilantro leaves) finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice/ as required

How to make Chana Poha

  • Soak Chana overnight and boil them properly around 5-6 whistles in a pressure cooker over low medium flame.
  • Rinse the poha in water till they soften.
  • Heat oil in a pan over low to medium flame.
  • Now Crackle the mustard seeds first.
  • Then add onions and saute them till they become translucent.
  • Add curry leaves and green chillies. Saute for half a minute.
  • Next add boiled chana and poha and stir.
  • Then add salt and turmeric powder to the poha and gently mix.
  • Cover and steam the poha for 2-3 minutes on a low flame.
  • When cooking check after 1 or 1.5 minutes and give a stir again.
  • Switch off the flame and let the Chana poha remain covered for 1-2 minutes.
  • Remove the lid and sprinkle some lemon juice, coriander leaves on poha.
  • Mix well gently and serve Chana poha hot with tea/ coffee or juice during breakfast or as evening snack.

Recipe Notes:

  • Rinse the poha in a strainer or colander under running water and don’t soak them in water. Rinsing the poha grains softens them easily.
  • After rinsing Poha well, press a grain and if it gets crushed/mashed easily then it is soft enough to be cooked. Otherwise, if it is dry and does not get mashed easily then sprinkle little water over it.
  • I mostly boil chana in more quantity for other preparations also and use some to prepare delicious, easy and healthy Chana Poha.
  • Add on to nutritional values by adding peas, carrot and potatoes especially for kids.
  • If Chana Poha looks very dry then sprinkle 1-2 tablespoon water and add 2 tablespoon tomato ketchup.
